PROMOTION AND RETENTION POLICY FOR WAYNE COUNTY SCHOOLS:

I. PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS:

Mastery of Essential Competencies

Subject area requirements: students must pass reading/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science/health.

Teacher(s) recommendation, judgment, evaluation:

Grades and daily work,

Effort,

Maturity (e.g. age, size, social adjustment), and

Standardized test data.




Special Procedures

Promotion of special education students will be based on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and the IEP Meeting decision

Promotion of students who have been identified as having special problems may be based on consensus of the grade level teachers and the principal.




Conduct: Retention will not be used as a disciplinary measure.

Previous Retention: Students being retained more than one time shall be referred to a promotion board composed of grade level teachers and the principal of appropriate action by consensus.
